International Committee of the Red Cross Assists Hamas in Recovery for Remains of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed that its representatives joined members of Hamas into zones of the Gaza Strip still under Israeli military control to facilitate the hunt for the remains of Israeli hostages.

Ceasefire Agreements and Hostage Remains Return

As part of the US-brokered ceasefire, which began on 10 October, Hamas is obligated to hand over the bodies of all captives as soon as possible. In exchange, the Israeli government has consented to hand over the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

Hamas has so far returned the remains of 15 of those taken hostage but zero in the past five days, as a portion of those bodies are thought to be in areas past the yellow line designating Gaza’s ceasefire.

“Upon the appeal of the parties, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) joined a participant in the hostilities as the group searched for the remains of the deceased beyond the military-established ‘yellow line’,” stated a spokesperson for the organization.

She continued: “The parties to the conflict determined the modalities of the mission and delegated the ICRC to serve as a impartial mediator. We was had no part in the discussions.”

She further explained: “Our team was did not participate in the physical hunt for the deceased nor does it take part in the physical recovery of human remains.”

Efforts to locate for the bodies of Israeli hostages has become one of the most sensitive issues in the ceasefire reached between the parties. However, the effort to find the bodies has been difficult from the outset, given the existence of an estimated enormous amount of debris across the territory, where, according to health officials, at least ten thousand residents are listed as missing, trapped under the debris.

Conflicting Claims on Body Location

Hamas has stated it does not know the exact locations of all the remains, saying it has been unable to communicate with a number of its teams that had been holding the captives and were reportedly eliminated during Israeli bombardments.
