England's Assistant Coach Shares His Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

In the past, the England assistant coach featured in League Two. Currently, he is focused on helping Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory next summer. The road from the pitch to the sidelines commenced through volunteering with the youth team. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he was hooked. He discovered his destiny.

Staggering Ascent

The coach's journey has been remarkable. Beginning in a senior role at Wigan, he built a reputation through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His stints with teams took him to elite sides, and he held roles with national teams for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with big names such as world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the peak as he describes it.

“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. We have to build a structured plan so we can to maximize our opportunities.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock day and night, they both push hard at comfort zones. Their methods involve psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes the England collective and rejects terms such as "break".

“It's not time off or a rest,” he explains. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”

Driven Leaders

The assistant coach says and Tuchel as extremely driven. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” he declares. “We strive to own the entire field and that's our focus most of our time to. It’s our job to not only anticipate with developments and to lead and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“There are 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We need to execute an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and explain it thoroughly during that time. It's about moving it from concept to details to know-how to performance.

“To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, we must utilize all the time available since we took the job. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with them. We have to spend time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

He is getting ready on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals with six wins out of six and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. Now is the moment to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“We are both certain that the football philosophy ought to embody all the positives of English football,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the flexibility, the physicality, the integrity. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and more in doing.

“There are emotional wins available to trainers in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, closing down early. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information currently. They can organize – defensive shapes. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”

Passion for Progress

His desire to get better is relentless. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns about the presentation, since his group included stars including former players. So, to build his skill set, he went into difficult settings he could find to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, and he trained detainees during an exercise.

He completed the course with top honors, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – became a published work. Lampard was among those impressed and he hired Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches except Barry.

His replacement with the club took over, within months, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on in the setup. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he got Barry out away from London and back alongside him. The Football Association see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
